Leipzig was a short but sweet stop on my Christmas market tour through Germany. With just 2 hours to explore, I managed to experience the festive charm of the Leipzig Christmas Market, located right in the heart of the city. While it wasn’t my favorite market of the trip, it was still a delightful way to soak in the holiday spirit before heading to my next destination.
Getting to Leipzig and Storing Luggage
I traveled to Leipzig from Nuremberg using the Deutschland-Ticket, which allows unlimited travel across Germany for 24 hours. It’s a great option for budget-friendly travel, especially if you’re visiting multiple cities in one day. You can find more details and book the ticket here:Deutsche Bahn Deutschland-Ticket
Since Leipzig was just a stopover for me on my way to Dresden, I needed a place to store my luggage. Initially, I planned to use the lockers at the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (main train station), but they were all full. Thankfully, I found a solution on Bounce.com, where I booked luggage storage at a nearby hotel just a 5-minute walk from the station. It was super convenient and allowed me to explore the city hands-free.

Exploring Leipzig Christmas Market
First Stop: Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church)
My first stop in Leipzig was the beautiful Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church), a historic landmark located just a short walk from the train station. The church is known for its stunning interior, with tall columns and pastel-colored details that create a serene and elegant atmosphere.
Nikolaikirche is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of peace and freedom, as it played a significant role in the peaceful protests that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. It’s a must-visit spot in Leipzig, even if you’re only in the city for a short time.
From Nikolaikirche, I made my way to the main Christmas market, passing by several smaller stalls along the way. In Leipzig, you can find Christmas stalls on almost every corner in the city center, which adds to the festive charm of the city during the holiday season.
The Main Market at the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus)
The Leipzig Christmas Market is located in the heart of the city, stretching from the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) to Marktplatz. This is the main area of the market, where you’ll find rows of beautifully decorated stalls offering handmade crafts, festive treats, and warm drinks like Glühwein.
The market’s central location makes it easy to explore, even if you’re short on time. The historic backdrop of the Old Town Hall adds a magical touch to the festive atmosphere, and the twinkling lights and holiday music make it a lovely place to wander.
Mädler Passage:
On my way through the city center, I took a short walk through the Mädler Passage, a historic and elegant shopping arcade. Since it was a Sunday, all the shops were closed, but a few cafés were open. However, they were so crowded that I decided to continue my short Christmas tour in Leipzig instead. The passage was still worth a quick visit to admire its beautiful architecture and festive decorations.
Smaller Stalls at Naschmarkt and Augustusplatz
In addition to the main market, there are smaller stalls scattered around Naschmarkt and Augustusplatz. These areas are less crowded but equally charming, offering unique gifts and delicious snacks.
At Augustusplatz, the Ferris wheel is a standout feature, adding a touch of magic to the market. While I didn’t have time to ride it, it’s a great spot for families or anyone looking to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city during the holiday season.
What I Tried at the Leipzig Christmas Market
While I didn’t have much time, I made sure to enjoy some festive treats. I sipped on a warm cup of Glühwein, which is always a must at any German Christmas market. I also grabbed some chips and fudge from the stalls, which were perfect for a quick snack.
Before leaving, I stopped at Lukas Bakery for a final coffee and a delicious Quarkbällchen (a fried dough ball filled with quark). It was the perfect way to end my short visit to Leipzig.

Final Thoughts on Leipzig
While I enjoyed my time at the Leipzig Christmas Market, I have to admit it’s not my favorite market of the trip. That said, the festive atmosphere, central location, and delicious treats made it a charming stop. Spending 2 hours here was just enough to soak in the holiday vibes, enjoy some Glühwein, and explore the main market. If you’re planning a Christmas market tour, Leipzig is perfect as a quick stopover rather than a full-day destination.
